Why Everyone Should Strive for the “Mamba Mentality” – RIP Kobe Bryant

why everyone should strive for the mamba mentality

When you hear the iconic name “Kobe Bryant” what’s the first thing you think of? Is it the memorable game-winners, championships, dunks, etc.? Or does it bring back memories of shooting paper balls into a trash can yelling “Kobe!” when we were younger?

Well whenever I hear Kobe Bryant the first thing I always think of is “mamba mentality.”

When the news broke yesterday morning, I and so many others had one of those “no way” moments, as you sit there frozen in disbelief.

Social media has been continuing to explode with those showing remorse for the legendary Kobe Bryant, who along with his daughter, Gianna, passed away in a helicopter crash…

These tweets below are just a few of the hundreds I scrolled through.

I’ll admit I was not a “huge” Kobe fan like many others I know, but I have nothing but immense respect for this iconic player. You can’t ignore the impact Kobe has had on countless individuals. He has been an inspiration to many.

I want to make this clear – the purpose of this post is not to capture attention and capitalize from a tragic situation. But instead share my thoughts on what the mamba mentality means to me, and why everyone should strive for this mindset.

What is the “Mamba Mentality?”

I kept going back and forth about whether to write this article or not, but I realized the concept of the mamba mentality aligns perfectly with the message I want readers to take away from Beers to Careers.

So what exactly is this “mamba mentality?” You can interpret Kobe’s motto however you want, but it’s all about his killer work ethic – having the willingness & determination to work harder than everyone else to be the best.

If you’ve ever followed Kobe’s career I’m certain you have heard the stories of his “military esque” workouts, and always being the first player in the gym even when he was injured.

In a story from ESPN, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh recalled a moment during Team USA preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics:

“Everybody else just woke up. We’re still stretching and yawning and looking at [Kobe] like, ‘What the f—?'” Wade said as he squinted into a frown and then burst into laughter. “We’re all yawning, and he’s already three hours and a full workout into his day.”

No corner-cutting, pure dedication to his career, never satisfied with immediate results, and the thought process of “others are getting better when you’re not.” These are all qualities that personify the mamba mentality.

Notable Kobe Bryant Quotes

Listed below are some notable Kobe Bryant quotes that illustrate what the mamba mentality is all about (Quotes from Everyday Power).

  • “Once you know what failure feels like, determination chases success.”
  • “I can’t relate to lazy people. We don’t speak the same language. I don’t understand you. I don’t want to understand you.”
  • “Either way, I refuse to change what I am. A lion has to eat. Run with me or run from me.”
  • “I don’t want to be the next Michael Jordan, I only want to be Kobe Bryant.”
  • “Losers visualize the penalties of failure. Winners visualize the rewards of success.”

Jay Williams better explains Kobe’s mentality in the video below.

Final Take

Whenever I hear Kobe Bryant, I think of the mamba mentality. Kobe’s ability to positively impact others beyond his physical reach is a rare trait.

I look forward to reading his biography “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play” in the near future, and plan on writing a book review.

Basketball fan or not, the mamba mentality lives on forever and is a mindset that everyone should aspire to have in their lives.

RIP to both the legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna…

Beers to Careers is Back! What to Expect in 2020 & Quick Life Update

beers to careers is back

Beers to Careers is back! “What in the world happened to your Beers to Careers Ryan?” is a question I’ve received more than once lately. It’s been about 6 months since my last post on this site when I explained my New Career Transition, and what my next endeavor all entailed.

There are several reasons for the inactivity of this site over the past months, and I’d be lying if I said some excuses weren’t involved. Yes my full time job along with my ThriveOneFive Media business is keeping me busier than ever, but that got me thinking – Why should that stop me from continuing this project that played a huge role in making my current situation possible?

I realized that if I want to keep taking my skills, knowledge, connections, business, and personal brand to the next level then this is the best way to accomplish that.

So with that being said, what should you expect to see from this site in 2020? Well with this post I want to provide you with both a quick life update and what you can expect from Beers to Careers going forward.

Quick Life Update

I won’t bore you with all of my future life plans, but I felt that it’s appropriate to share what I have planned for the short term in 2020.

I’ve already broke the news to some family & friends, but starting in July or August 2020 (whenever my apartment lease ends) I will be moving back home to Fairfax, Iowa.

I can already hear it – “What the **** Ryan you’re 24 why would you ever move back home?” Glad you asked that’s a great point.

Well I’ve been going back and forth with this for months now, and I concluded with my current situation of working remotely, why the hell don’t I start taking advantage of it? So that’s when I realized I now have the opportunity to do something I’ve been putting off – travel & reconnect with friends.

beers to careers oregon

Exploring the Portland, OR area has been one of my favorite trips to date

A good friend of mine actually proposed this idea over a few drinks during a happy hour awhile back, and I remember laughing it off thinking I would never sell my soul and move back home as an adult. (Thanks Erik Smith)

Now I’m not going to go overboard and travel to exotic countries around the world, but there are several locations within the U.S., Canada, and maybe Central America that I’m craving to visit.

This new endeavor will not only fulfill my goal of traveling, but if done correctly I will also save more money in the process, reconnect with friends, escape my comfort zone, meet new people, catch some events, attend conferences, and the list goes on.

In terms of how long I plan on doing this I have no idea. It could be a few months, 6 months, 1 year, I’m just going with the flow and seeing what happens.

Des Moines will always be a special place to me, as I’m met some of my best friends and have great memories here. Yes it will be difficult to leave, but who knows I might return to the 515 after this traveling phase.

New Career Transition: Why Did I Leave My Corporate Job?

New Career Transition Why Did I Leave My Corporate Job

I’ve had several people reaching out to me lately about my new career transition, and what exactly I have been up to these past few months. I feel like I’ve fallen off the grid a bit with the excessive amount of hours I’ve been putting in outside of my 9-5, and Beers to Careers has been dormant because of that.

If I recall a couple weeks ago I calculated that I put in 80-90 hours total in one week, which was very stressful to say the least. So what have I been doing with my time? Why exactly did I leave my corporate job? Well in order to best reflect on what’s been going on with my life lately I felt that expressing my thoughts through a blog post made the most sense.

Everyone wants to make their LinkedIn profile stand out from the competition, but how can you execute this? “Get a good head shot, don’t connect with too many people, write an interesting summary” is the cliche advice I’ve always been told.

This post will explain how to make your LinkedIn profile stand out in 2020. Listed below are some of my LinkedIn strategies that have led to numerous opportunities, increased my search appearances, and helped enhance my overall professional brand.

First Year in the Real World - Here is What I've Learned

It’s hard to believe that my one year anniversary of being in the “real world” is here. I’ve learned a ton this past year, and have seen myself grow tremendously as a new young professional.

It’s very interesting because throughout my educational journey I’ve quickly realized that I was consumed with a lot of information that isn’t all relevant towards my generation. It’s crazy to look back this past year, and this post will reflect on some of the most important concepts I’ve learned. Read more

This was another great experience for me to get outside my comfort zone and help current college students learn more about the real world transition.

How to Make the Most Out of Your Free Time as a Young Professional

Transitioning to the Monday through Friday 9-5 schedule can be a big adjustment for many recent college graduates. No more naps after class, Netflix during the day, spending hours on social media, or going out during the week.

Looking back, I wish I would’ve made better use of my free time in college, but no reason to let that hold me back now.
